F. V. Renown (1990)

RenownThe plaque reads ...

F V "Renown"
Steel motor fishing vessel of 20 tons
working off Granville Harbour, W. Coast
left 13.04.1990 but failed to return
Lost were owner/master Robert Patten,
deckhand Gary Matthey, but body of
crewman Mark Jones never recovered

As the cause of the loss of the Renown could not be determined, it was thought it was most likely the 45 foot vessel had been overwhelmed by an unusually large wave.

Renown, fishing vessel, was working off Granville Harbour, on the West Coast of Tasmania, on 13th April 1990.

Owner-master Robert Patten intended to return to Strahan between 1 and 1.30 p.m., but failed to make regular radio reports at 8.45 a.m. or 1.30 p.m. Aircraft located the missing vessel's life raft and buoys on rocks just north of Granville Harbour.

The master's body was found 4 kms west of Granville Harbour next morning at 8.30 a.m.

Deckhand Gary Matthey was found on Granville Beach on 15th April.

The 3rd crewman, Mark Jones's body was never recovered.

It was thought that the vessel may have been overwhelmed by an unusually large wave as sometime occurred in that area. Renown was a steel motor fishing vessel of 20 tons, built at Hobart by Robert Brinkman in 1960. Owned by R. T. Patten for over 20 years.
