HMAS Darwin was on routine border patrol operations in the vicinity of Christmas Island when Leading Seaman Gurr was reported missing. A full-scale search and rescue operation led by the Navy with resources of the Royal Australian Air Force and Coastwatch failed to find Cameron Gurr.
A Board of Inquiry found that Leading Seaman Gurr was lost at sea between 12.30 am and 1.00 am on 4 May 2002 and that he died sometime that day or in the days shortly thereafter.
