Deckhand/diver David James Colson (24) recently lost his life north of Smithton when the abalone dinghy on which he was working went down on 8.10.2007. Mr. Colson on this occasion had been working as the deckhand with his companion Tony Burton as diver. Mr. Burton valiantly tried to save his young crewmate but after battling for about 8 hours in the freezing Bass Strait water, Mr. Colson succumbed to exposure as they reached Perkins Island.
